Learning The Bible Proficiently
The Bible is a huge, thick book and studying it can seem to be insurmountable initially. Many folks need to look at the Bible, but might not know where or ways to start. The best way to study or learn anything is to blend your character, learning style, and way of life. The following couple of ideas are helpful in developing a plan of attack.
Step one : Utilise a System
In the same way that it’s simpler to follow a recipe, road map, or the instructions that come along with Yuletide gift’s labeled “some assembly required”, studying the Bible can seem a load less frightening if you’ve got a plan of attack. Find a system which has achievable targets, whether or not that be buying a study guide for a particular subject, using a guide that outlines reading thru the Bible in a year, or picking a selected book and doing a detailed study.
Step two : Start to Study
After you choose a system, the next step is to follow the guide. Starting to look at the Bible will probably be tougher to do than picking a system in Step one, so try and find methods to personalize it, make it more delightful, and keep it from becoming boring. Writing in the margins, journaling thoughts, and writing down questions are good methods to help hold your attention. Looking up the answers to your questions later , curiosity driven research, is also a good way to better remember and learn what you are studying.
Step three : Go Deeper
If the ideas in Step two aren’t really enough to hold your interest and you are still looking for techniques to make studying the Bible fresh, look for ways to increase variation while still staying true to the plan you originally came up with in Step one. Try using two different variations of the Bible, using a concordance to look up key words, the looking up cross-references in a Study Bible, or looking for sermons or articles that apply to what you are studying, beyond what’s included in the system you selected.
Step 4 : Learning and Meditating
Meditating, reading portions aloud to yourself, and reminding yourself of verses throughout the day ( whether or not that be by strategically place note cards, burning audio files onto a CD, or some other way ) on scripture that you discover is a way of memorizing parts of the Bible. As you do these things, try and think what your life will be like when the words of the Lord God are hidden in your heart and drawn to the surface of your life by the Lord.
The simplest way to truly learn and remember something is to study it for you, because you have an interest in what you’re researching and because you know it will without delay benefit you. If you like some advice that comes your way, of course, take it and run with it! But don’t let other’s well-meaning ideas and comments side track you from the system you decide is best for you. And be certain to guard whatever time you put aside to study, even from other nice things.
